Ms Carey first crossed into Mr Packer's business life in October after making a high profile red carpet and singing appearance at the opening of Macau's $4 billion Studio City casino, part owned by Crown. Several days after his 48th birthday in September, Mr Packer struck a deal with his sister Gretel to divide the family fortune with the legal agreement making Ms Packer a billionaire and one of Australia's richest women. That same month - in August - Mr Packer and his ex-wife Erica sold their Vaucluse home in Sydney for a new Australian record of $70 million cementing their decision to move their family base to Los Angeles. Two months later the magnate broke with several decades of tradition after stepping down as chairman of Crown, marking the first time a Packer had not been at the helm of the company. The Sydney-born businessman started dating Ms Carey in June 2015 after they first met in Aspen, Colorado. The proposal caps a whirlwind six months for Mr Packer, who owns a 53 per cent stake in casino operator Crown Resorts.
Mr Packer's proposal in the second high-profile engagement of an Australian business figure in as many weeks after the 84 year-old media tycoon Rupert Murdoch announced his engagement to former model Jerry Hall, the former wife of musician Sir Mick Jagger. Ms Carey, whose net worth is estimated at $US500 million, sang at the opening of Mr Packer's latest Macau casino in October and performed on New Year's Eve at Crown Melbourne.
